Normandale

This pattern is available on Ravelry.

by Norah Gaughan

Worked in both chunky weight Quarry and DK weight Arbor yarns, the Normandale cardigan is a feat in design ingenuity. Knit flat in one piece to the underarms, each row of the main body is worked using just one color with stitches of the other color slipped along the way to create a nubbly mosaic motif reminiscent of Portland’s many bridges. Slightly sloping shoulders and no body shaping make Normandale an excellent cardigan for wearers of any gender. A shawl collar worked in brioche stitch adds extra oomph to this standout design.

Please note: the stitch patterns used for this garment are charted only.

Construction

  • The body is worked flat in one piece to the underarms, then fronts and back are worked separately to the shoulders. The shoulder seams are sewn together and the sleeves are picked up and worked flat to the cuff, then seamed.
  • The collar is worked separately in two pieces and joined with the Joinery Bind Off before being sewn to the cardigan.
  • The collar is shaped using Short Rows: German Method.
  • Each row of the chart is worked using just one color, with stitches of the other color slipped to create the pattern. The column to the right of the chart indicates which color is the working yarn for each row.
  • A circular needle is used to accommodate the large number of stitches and to pick up stitches for the sleeves.
